A regulation table tennis table is 2.74 m long, 1.525 m wide and 76 cm high. That is about 9 ft × 5 ft at 2.5 ft high. Room size and top thickness are separate questions. This guide answers all three.
What size is a regulation table tennis table?
A regulation table has a playing surface 2.74 m long and 1.525 m wide. The top sits 76 cm above the floor. In feet, that is about 9 ft long, 5 ft wide and 2.5 ft high. These figures come from ITTF law 2.1.
The same law sets the markings. A white line 2 cm wide runs along each edge. For doubles, a white centre line 3 mm wide splits each half in two. The net is 15.25 cm high along its full length. Its posts stand 15.25 cm outside each side line.
Compact and "mini" tables are sold for play at home. They are smaller than this, and the size is not fixed. So check the stated size of the actual model before you plan a room. Do not assume every table is full size.
Does ITTF require a particular top thickness?
No. The ITTF table law does not set a thickness. It sets a bounce test instead. A standard ball dropped from 30 cm should bounce about 23 cm, evenly across the surface. The wording is "about", not "at least". See the ITTF's table-law text.
So 12 mm, 18 mm and 25 mm describe the top, not the length or width. Tables with the same footprint can use different tops. A thickness label alone cannot show that a table meets the full standard. Compare it with the surface finish, the frame and the maker's stated specs.

How much room do you need around a table tennis table?
Add your chosen clearance to both ends and both sides. For a full-size table:
- Room length = 2.74 m + clearance behind each end.
- Room width = 1.525 m + clearance along each side.

These are worked examples, not minimum safe sizes or official courts. Furniture, doors, pillars and other players all change what works. A low ceiling also limits high lobs, so check the height too. Mark the space with tape first. Then try a backswing, a few side steps and picking up a ball before you order.
How much space does an international competition need?
ITTF international playing conditions call for a space of at least 14 m × 7 m × 5 m high. Some wheelchair and Masters events allow smaller limits. This is a rule for international events, not advice for a home room. See rule 3.2.3.1 in the 2026 ITTF Statutes, and check your own event's rules.

- Open size, including the frame and fittings.
- Folded width, depth and height.
- Packed size and weight of each box.
